It only takes a few bites to turn a trip to the woods into a trip to the emergency room. It happened again on Wednesday in the Nuoro area, where a resident was poisoned after consuming mushrooms he had picked himself.
The worst was averted by the prompt intervention of mycologists from the Nuoro Local Health Authority (ASL 3), who quickly identified the toxic species, allowing health workers to intervene in time. The incident has rekindled alarm in the middle of the harvest season: the Local Health Authority (ASL 3) Mycological Inspectorate urges all pickers to never consume mushrooms without first checking for any signs of illness.
The service is free and available at the Nuoro, Sorgono, Macomer, and Siniscola locations, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Info: 0784 240176). Experts remind that even edible species should be cooked and consumed in moderation, never in multiple meals, to avoid digestive problems. If you experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, even after 24 hours, you are advised to go to the emergency room immediately and take any leftover mushrooms with you.
"The mycological check is free and can save a life," reiterates the ASL 3 of Nuoro.
