It has become one of the symbolic places of the disastrous passage of cyclone Cleopatra on the island in November 2013. The Mughina tunnel, on the ring road of Nuoro, was flooded with several vehicles trapped. From that day and for several years, at every weather alert the entrances were blocked. Since January 2022, however, the tunnel has been closed because, during some modernization works, the great danger of collapses emerged . In fact, deep cracks were found in the vault .
Now, after a long wait, the process to reopen seems to have accelerated. Once the geological surveys have been completed, the agreement between the municipality and the region will be signed within this month (from the last legislature there has been funding of 10 million euros) and the in-house company OIS will take care of the next steps, executive planning and works, until reopening. The regional councilor for public works Antonio Più, in Nuoro at the presentation of the extraordinary road plan, assured «continuous monitoring so that the times are as quick as possible, because it is a fundamental infrastructure, not only for Nuoro but for the entire territory» . And also for the extraordinary commissioner of the Barbagia capital Giovanni Pirisi «the main objective is to hurry».
