Valencia is the new European Green Capital 2024 . The award, established in 2010, is awarded every year to a European city with over 100,000 inhabitants that has distinguished itself for environmental, social and economic sustainability.
The results were announced at the awards ceremony in this year's green capital, France's Grenoble . Having reached the final against Cagliari , the Spanish city will succeed the Estonian capital, Tallin, the European green capital for 2023.
"You are the heart of our environmental policies, you are the reason why we have established this award, why we bring cities together to share best practices," said the European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginijus Sinkevičius , addressing the cities that reached the final in a video message broadcast during the award ceremony.
Valencia will receive a € 600,000 bonus from the European Commission for organizing the year as a European green capital. The European Green Leaf 2024 award, dedicated to cities with 20,000 to 100,000 inhabitants, was awarded to the cities of Elsinore (in Denmark) and Velenje (in Slovenia).
