Not only NATO with the Noble Jump. As soon as the Open Sea ended, yet another gigantic military exercise in Sardinia began yesterday.
Joint Stars 2023 is the most important national defense exercise, directed and planned by the Operational Command of the Joint Forces Summit (COVI): more than 4,000 men and women and about 900 between air, land and naval assets are involved . They practice at the Decimomannu airport, in the shooting ranges of Teulada and Quirra and in the opposite maritime areas.
All while NATO is mobilizing 1,500 men and simulating the response to an attack on an allied country.
In this first phase of Joint Stars, which will last until May 14 , the Army, Navy, Air Force, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, Civil Protection, Fire Brigade, Italian Red Cross and Port Authority are involved.
In Decimomannu, for example, the re-entry into the earth's atmosphere of the remains of a rocket used to put satellites into orbit will be simulated, complete with intervention on the site of the impact to carry out the analysis and decontamination of the area.
Also in Decimomannu, the waters in front of Cagliari will be patrolled for an activity to combat smuggling at sea , which will see the use of the multi-purpose patrol boat "Monte Sperone" and an ATR-72. Furthermore, 15 nautical miles from the coast, the sighting of some migrant boats in precarious conditions will be simulated, one of which will capsize . Fast patrol boats of the Coast Guard and the Yellow Flames, with CRI medical teams on board, will start the search and rescue of the shipwrecked. The intervention of Air Force helicopters is also expected, which will carry out the medical evacuations.
And again, advanced medical posts of the Red Cross to help the injured, management of displaced persons, cyber operations, evacuation of refugees, checkpoints to deal with illicit trafficking also by land and sounding of the seas by specialized naval assets.
But also Noble Jump, like the NATO exercise, "concerns an inter-force and multinational military response in compliance with article 5 of NATO, which establishes the principle of defense in the event of aggression against an allied country ".
"It will be a multi-domain exercise - announced the Defense - which will see the Italian Armed Forces train in the defense of air, land and sea spaces, in cyber and space security, in the defense against chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear contamination and in countering the threats deriving from emerging technologies, increasingly used in the manufacture of submarine or aerial drones".
The exercise is divided into two phases, the second will end on May 26th .
