The ravages of Cyclone Harry continue to weigh heavily on the archaeological site of Nora, one of Sardinia's most important sites. Yesterday morning, the Pula municipal administration welcomed Giuseppe Lupo, MEP for the Islands constituency, to a tour of the excavations, which were severely damaged by the storm.
The greatest damage occurred in the Punic quarter and the Torre del Coltellazzo peninsula, areas particularly exposed to the force of the storm surges and winds that have battered the coast in recent weeks. During the inspection, Mayor Walter Cabasino expressed grave concern about the site's condition, explaining that the overall damage estimate amounts to approximately €14 million.
"Rapid intervention and adequate resources are needed," explains the mayor, "including through the involvement of the European Union."
In recent months, MEP Giuseppe Lupo had already been actively urging the Government to promptly request access to aid provided by the European Union Solidarity Fund. He also submitted a priority question to the European Commission to request support measures for populations and businesses damaged by extreme weather events.
The visit to Nora was an opportunity to see firsthand the extent of the critical issues affecting the archaeological site, a heritage of great historical and cultural value for Sardinia and the entire Mediterranean.
The Municipality is now appealing to the national government to adopt urgent measures to protect and secure the area. "The sensitivity shown by MEP Lupo gives us hope," says Cabasino, "but now the state must take concrete action to protect such an important asset of our identity."
