No culprits, according to the investigators. The Prosecutor of Oristano, through the deputy Sara Ghiani, has asked for the filing of the investigation into the gigantic fire which between 24 and 25 July 2021 devastated 13 thousand hectares of Montiferru, in the Oristano area, destroying farms and homes.
Within 20 days the only person who appeared as the offended party, the lawyer Rafaele Cocco - the flames reached his home - announced that he will oppose the prosecutor's request. The decision now rests with the investigating magistrate, who could accept the request or order new investigations.
«Through my lawyer, my colleague Serena Contini, we requested a copy of the file», explains Cocco, «we want to read the documents. We have many doubts about the fact that the rescue machine did not leave immediately in those days".
For the Public Prosecutor's Office, however, supported by a maxi consultancy, there are no people responsible for that devastation: in essence, there were no leaks in the rescue machine and in the intervention procedures to limit the damage.
The mega fire was triggered by a car burning on the provincial road between Bonarcado and Santo Lussurgiu. Due to the heat and the wind some embers "regained life" fueling a new fire front that reached Santu Lussurgiu and followed by Cuglieri and Scano Montiferro.
For two days hundreds of houses and farms were evacuated in the area while the whole area was bombarded by jets of water from the aircraft of the regional and national fleet, engaged together with dozens of men on the ground to put out the flames.
Once the fire was extinguished, the investigations coordinated by the then Oristano prosecutor Ezio Domenico Basso and entrusted to the forestry corps began. Once the investigations were completed, the investigators ruled out fraud but the investigation continued on the rescue side, the timeliness of the interventions and the number of forces in the field.
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, due to the particular weather conditions - the wind was blowing strongly - even the intervention of several vehicles and men would not have limited the damage. Hence the filing request.
