Ninety allogeneic and autologous procedures in 2024, 84 of which on adults and 6 on pediatric patients. These are the numbers of the Marrow Transplant Center of the Hematology and CTMO structure of the Businco hospital, which is part of Arnas Brotzu, directed by Professor Giovanni Caocci.
Numbers but also, as we read in a note, "the concrete testimony of the daily commitment of a multidisciplinary team that works with passion to improve the care and life of patients".
A virtuous path started by Giorgio La Nasa, who directed it until a few months ago, and by the dedication of the many professionals who work there. Alongside Eugenia Piras – referent for the adult transplant program -, Marianna Greco – referent for the specialist hematology laboratory -, Rossella Mura and Antonio Piroddi for the pediatric transplant program, Giulia Fadda – referent for the apheresis unit -, Alba Piras – referent for the Quality Path -, there are doctors, nurses, Oss, biologists and laboratory technicians.
The facility is home to the Hematology specialization school, directed by Giovanni Caocci, who comments: "Bone marrow transplantation, also known as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, is the therapeutic treatment by which a diseased marrow is replaced with a healthy one, thus re-establishing the normal production of blood cells. The procedure," he continues, "is very complex and can only be performed if several conditions coexist, the most relevant of which are: the type of pathology the patient is suffering from and his state of remission, the patient's clinical conditions, and the availability of a compatible donor in the case of an allogenic transplant."
"We will continue to invest in research and training," comments Brotzu's general manager, Agnese Foddis, "always looking to the future, we must prepare to face new challenges with the same determination. The Center is a fundamental point of reference for innovation in the hematological field and must continue to be so thanks to the tireless support of a team of professionals who are part of our Company's heritage."
Confirming the importance of the work carried out by the Center in Sardinia is the comment of the director of the Local Transplant Coordination structure of Arnas, Antonio Manti: «The Bone Marrow Transplant Center confirms itself as a point of reference of excellence at a regional level, contributing in a decisive way to the innovation and optimization of therapeutic pathways, in the constant commitment to guarantee patients the best treatment options».
