On the national day dedicated to organ donation, Sardinia confirms itself among the most virtuous regions. The number of transplants is growing and opposition is decreasing, with several island municipalities at the top of the special national rankings. In Nuoro, in the Sebastiano Satta square created by Costantino Nivola, an initiative promoted by the Sardinia Transplant Association, which has long been involved above all in the field of raising awareness of the topic and promoting the culture of donation. In various countries the stone was also laid in memory of those who, with an act of generosity, saved lives.
But it is in particular in schools that transplant recipients go to tell their experiences to the younger generations.
At San Francesco di Nuoro, in the first three months of this year, seven potential donors and only two oppositions. As Pierina Ticca, coordinator of the transplant unit of the hospital in the Barbagia capital, underlined, «however, much remains to be done. The waiting lists are still too long and the opposition, over 30% at a national level, is still too many. And it is in this direction that the work of raising awareness and promoting the culture of donation must be directed."
