Twenty-two years later, the memory of the Nasiriyah massacre remains a deep wound in our country's memory. Today we pay tribute to the 28 people who lost their lives in that attack, especially the 19 Italians, including Silvio Olla, Chief Marshal of the Sassari Brigade, and Massimo Ficuciello, also a Marshal of the Brigade.

Thus said the President of the Sardinia Region, Alessandra Todde , on the occasion of the anniversary of the attack of 12 November 2003 in Iraq.

"Their sacrifice," the president added, "reminds us every day of the value of dedication, duty, and peace , especially at a time when the world is experiencing new conflicts and suffering. Remembering Nasiriyah means renewing our commitment to building a future based on dialogue, solidarity, and respect for human life."

On November 19, 2003, 19 Italians lost their lives in an Al Qaeda suicide attack outside the “Maestrale” base of the Multinational Specialized Unit in Iraq, in what was the worst massacre involving our soldiers since the Second World War.

The Regional Council also expresses its remembrance and condolences. "Remembering with deep emotion the Chief Marshal of the Sassari Brigade, Silvio Olla, and all the other victims of the Nasiriyah massacre takes on, if possible, an even more profound meaning this year," said Prime Minister Piero Comandini . He added: "The ongoing conflicts, the sacrifice of entire populations, the devastation of territories make us reflect on the meaning of the word peace."

The regional council also posted a commemorative video, which was shared on its official social media channels.
