The week from May 25th to June 2nd was dedicated to multiple sclerosis , an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that causes loss of myelin and damage to nerve cells. Today we celebrate the day of awareness and information on this serious neurological pathology under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic.

Multiple sclerosis is one of the most common causes of disability in people between the ages of 18 and 40. The prevalence is higher in females, with a ratio of 3:1 compared to males .

The interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental factors plays a key role in its onset and evolution . Improvements in diagnosis and immunomodulatory therapies have led to a more accurate diagnosis and an earlier start of therapy, with a general improvement in prognosis compared to the recent past.

The health, social and economic impact is significant : the average annual costs ranged from 22,800 euros for mild forms to 57,500 for severe ones.

Sardinia is one of the regions with the highest risk of disease in the adult and pediatric population worldwide . The incidence on the island is almost double that found in other Italian regions.
