Sardinia is far behind in terms of the skills acquired by students who have completed their high school studies. More than 60%, the island is bringing up the rear in Italy, has not reached an adequate level of skills in mathematics . The data, which arises from the Invalsi tests, was illustrated in Cagliari by the director of the Agnelli Foundation Andrea Gavosto.

«The emergency, which concerns skills and learning - Gavosto explained - is very worrying. It means that many kids, at the end of high school, are unable to carry out logical reasoning ».

On the other hand, the figure for early school leaving has improved in recent years. Now Sardinia is at 13.2%, national average 12.7, after having exceeded 20% at the worst moment .

Where to start from? The leap in quality in Italy does not depend on the amount of investments: «We are in line - explained the president of the Agnelli Foundation - with the average of OECD countries. But we misuse resources . We invest little in school buildings, even if Sardinia has made important steps forward with the Iscol@ project, and in teaching tools for improving the training system. Then we need to think about the training of teachers and an improvement in the economic treatment of the teachers themselves. Without neglecting the extension of school time with sports activities and workshops dedicated to the theatre".

During the meeting, promoted by the University's Department of Economics and Business, the volume "The blocked school" edited by Gavosto himself was presented. Also present were Adriana Diliberto, professor of economic policy at the university of the capital, the director of the regional school office Francesco Feliziani, Matteo Frate, coordinator of the "Iscol@" project unit of the Sardinia Region and Anna Maria Maullu, former president of the Principals Association.
