The square of the parish of San Giovanni Battista della Salle was barely able to contain the many people who this afternoon wanted to say their final goodbyes to Giuseppe Casula, known as Peppe, the truck driver from Pirri who died on Monday at the age of 44 . His colleagues' trucks were also in line, all astonished.

The church was also packed with people. After all, it couldn't have been otherwise, for a person who passed away too soon, loved and esteemed by so many. His name had hit the headlines on the island and nationally for the beautiful gesture he performed on 22 September 2022 : on that day, in fact, he had literally prevented a tragedy from happening by blocking the state road 131 Dcn with his truck, a few kilometers after the Lula crossroads, to allow an elderly woman to make a U-turn in complete safety after having mistakenly taken the road against traffic .

The episode, defined as heroic by many, was filmed by the truck driver himself with his cell phone and immediately went viral on social media. By blocking the road he saved not only the elderly woman, but also many other motorists who were traveling along the highway. Today many mourn him, no one feels like speaking , the sadness is obviously immense, tears run down the faces of those who didn't want to miss out to say goodbye to him one last time.

In the front row of the church, his wife Lorena (with whom he had his two daughters Maura and Alice), his parents Silvano and Maria Grazia, his brothers Jonatha and Fabrizio and his sons-in-law .

«There are many of us, heartbroken because Peppe is no longer with us . We must not forget that good only happens if and when we want it, it is not something that can be planned. And he did good when it was most needed ", said the parish priest Don Walter Onano during his touching homily, recalling the episode in which he was the protagonist two years ago, and added: "He faced with strength and courage in the challenges presented to him."

A long round of applause accompanied the exit of the coffin from the church, while white balloons were sent flying into the sky from one of the trucks parked in the churchyard . «Hi Peppe», «Fly high, friend», are some of the greetings from his friends and colleagues as the hearse began to move slowly to leave the church and head towards the cemetery. Accompanying him on his last journey were his fellow truck drivers who, aboard their trucks, honked their horns in unison . Even the drivers of the CTM buses, passing through Via San Gottardo in front of the church, honored him by honking their horns.
