In the first half of 2025, there were 125,000 cancellations of medical appointments in Sardinia, 30% of which occurred the day before or on the same day. Additionally, 57,800 Sardinians did not show up for their appointments.

This behavior "has a significant impact on the health of Sardinians, given that 100,000 visits cannot be rescheduled and made available to other Sardinians in need of care."

Governor Alessandra Todde provided the data on the so-called “no shows” , underlining how «improving the state of waiting lists also requires careful monitoring and transparent sharing of what is happening and the behaviors that need to be changed».

"To date," Todde emphasizes, "no-shows and cancellations the day before or on the day of appointments aren't subject to penalties, not even the cost of a ticket, as is the case in other regions."

"The Region," the governor continues, "has a duty to improve recall activities to confirm appointments and digital access for online cancellations. We are also working to implement active lists: virtual diaries for each healthcare provider, designed to temporarily hold booking requests that were not immediately available and will need to be managed in the back office and/or via recall . We are also implementing different booking procedures for cancer and chronic disease patients."

"However," Todde appeals to regional healthcare users, "I ask all of us to make an effort: if we book an appointment in the public system and for some reason have to cancel, let's leave the option for another Sardinian to use that slot in our place. Let's communicate the cancellation in good time. A new healthcare system on our island," the governor concludes, "also requires a new pact of solidarity among all of us."
