«This place, the scene of the tragedy that happened 28 years ago, a place of memory, suitable for those who want to stop for a moment of remembrance, for a flower or for a prayer, must be reserved for a pedestrian area, and not obscured by the renovation works of the state road 597 by Anas». Roberto Frau , a retired carabiniere, asks for protection and respect for the area where on 16 August 1995 his brother Walter Frau, a 29-year-old carabiniere born in Ossi but raised in Porto Torres, and Ciriaco Carru, a 32-year-old police officer from Bitti, were killed . Both were victims of the terrible ambush organized by a gang that was preparing to attack two armored vans in transit on the SS 597 Sassari-Olbia.
Today at 11, in the locality of Pede 'e Semene in the Municipality of Ozieri, the commemoration ceremony of the 28th anniversary of their death was held. Near the memorial stones on the 597 state road, in the presence of the provincial commander of the carabinieri, Massimiliano Pricchiazzi, the mayors of Ozieri, Porto Torres and Chiaramonti, Marco Peralta, Massimo Mulas and Luigi Pinna and the families of the fallen, Don Francesco Ledda, parish priest of the Church of San Nicola di Ozieri, celebrated a brief ceremony to remember the extreme sacrifice made by the two soldiers in the performance of duty.
"It is important to meet every year in the Chilivani countryside to remember two Sardinian boys who sacrificed their lives in the fight against crime - said mayor Mulas -. We cling to their families who still feel acute and acute pain and especially invite the younger ones not to forget what Walter and Ciriaco, with their example, have done for their community ».
Mayor Peralta is committed to guaranteeing pedestrian walkways in respect of the site of the tragedy . "Today as then, it is necessary to solemnly remember their extreme sacrifice - he said - to hand it down to posterity, explaining to them that it was not in vain and to show human closeness and deep gratitude to their families, who still bear the heavy burden of pain and of their absence".
