Seventy-seven years old, a fractured femur, a bedsore, and four days on an emergency room stretcher. This is the story of Quintina Coccodì, who was urgently admitted to the Policlinico di Monserrato on May 14 and has been stuck in a transit area waiting for a bed in the ward ever since.
"My wife is lying on her side, she is in pain, and she can't even change position: that cot is not suitable for a person in her condition," denounces her husband Mario, who has been keeping watch at her side for days. His story is an indictment of a system that seems to have jammed: "I don't criticize the staff, they are kind and do what they can, but here we are camped out. What kind of healthcare is this? Is it possible that in these days, in orthopedics or other departments, you can't find a bed?", thunders the man, aware that this is a situation that weighs on all the hospitals in the capital.
Meanwhile, the Policlinico reassures the family: «The patient is being monitored by orthopedists and is receiving all the necessary care . The transfer to the ward will take place as soon as a bed becomes available».
