A new arm at the CPR. An expansion, a renovation, to accommodate up to approximately 100 guests.
In line with what was announced by the Government to contain the migrant emergency, work is also about to start in the Macomer CPR to make the entire old prison usable, which has become the only detention center for the repatriation of irregular migrants in Sardinia, operational since the beginning of 2020. A structure which, as illustrated by the Government, is located in "an area with very low population density and which can be easily perimetered and monitored".
Work is therefore imminent on the renovation and expansion of the building which will have to contain another 32 places in addition to the 50 occupied. The interventions will be carried out by a Roman company which was awarded the work to be carried out on two floors of the former prison building. Yesterday there was an inspection of the premises, with the technicians of the Roman company together with the managers of Invitalia, which manages the tender procedure on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior. From what transpires, the renovation will last some time. The Roman company still has to sign the contract and immediately start work to transform the cells of the former prison into rooms for two or three people, including family rooms.
For his part, mayor Riccardo Uda says that the expansion and doubling were foreseen in the 2018 agreements, with the memorandum of understanding signed at the Ministry of the Interior. «On that occasion - says the mayor - we were guaranteed, in return, the strengthening of the carabinieri company, the police station and the return to Macomer of the financial police's lieutenant. Nothing has yet been implemented. In Rome we say that promises must be kept ."
Will the enlargement create problems? “We are evaluating it and will evaluate it in the next few days,” concludes the mayor.
