While the Municipal Administration of La Maddalena , in recent days, "took note" of the definitive project for the expansion of the Naval Museum "Lamboglia" for a sum of 1,340,000 Euro, in the waters of the island of Spargi the exact point where the wreck of the Roman ship is located was found, the material of which, removed at the time, is largely contained in the museum structure itself.
The discovery was announced by Dr. Gabriella Gasperetti, head of the Archaeological Heritage Area of the Superintendency of Sassari and Nuoro, last Sunday, October 13, again in La Maddalena, as part of the Abba Fest, an archaeology and underwater photography festival.
It was in 1958 that the archaeologist Nino Lamboglia, with the Experimental Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Albenga, began the first investigations on a shoal, in Spargi, located at a depth of around 18 metres, finding the wreck of a ship, wrecked around 120 BC, which must have been around 35 metres long and around 9 metres wide.
"Everyone was looking for it," the underwater archaeologist said, "and finally, with the dive on October 12, we managed, with the collaboration of the Diving Centers, to find the exact spot."
In fact, the detection techniques of the time, in the sea, which is large, were not yet very precise.
The Museum, dedicated to the archaeologist Nino Lamboglia, was set up in the 80s, with the reconstruction in full scale of the section of the ship's hull, with a considerable number of amphorae and with lead anchor stocks and other materials found. Municipal museum that has not had an easy life in these years, which have recorded, for one reason or another, various closures.
The final project approved on the proposal of the Councilor for Public Works, Federica Porcu, provides, as stated in the resolution, "to increase the spaces intended for welcoming visitors with the offer of collateral services such as to allow economic autonomy in the possible subsequent management; the expansion will allow the articulation of a different distribution of the exhibition space with the increase of the exhibition surface so as to favor, along the visit route, in-depth studies on the marine environment, natural sciences and environmental education; the creation of collateral and reception services to offer visitors such as a bookshop and cafeteria space".
The sum necessary for the execution of the intervention, which is «€ 1,270,000.00, finds due and regular coverage with an imputation to the following Chapter 4759/2024 and for € 70,000 from budget funds».
