The municipal administration of La Maddalena has allocated 70 thousand euros for the design and construction of a bronze monument, depicting a lion, with dimensions 200x150x120 cm, to be positioned on the Garibaldi column, in Piazza XXIII February.

In 1907, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the Hero of the Two Worlds, the granite column was erected on a project by the architect Valfredo Vizzotto, 17 meters high, with a bronze medallion on one side and on the other side with a bronze plaque bearing the city coat of arms. In 1923, in order to make the work even more "majestic and significant", it was thought to decorate the top of the same with a monument depicting a lion, symbol of the city, to whose realization the citizens could have contributed through a voluntary contribution. This work was never completed, probably due to lack of funds necessary for its construction.

It is now the will of Mayor Fabio Lai, as part of his orientation aimed at enhancing the history of La Maddalena, also for tourism purposes, to carry out the work. 2023 marks the centenary of the document attesting to this unfulfilled will, and the municipal administration has set in motion. The inauguration is scheduled for next May.
