They were accused of mistreating their mother and their ninety-year-old grandmother who was bedridden for two months at the end of 2021 in Ittiri. But today in court in Sassari the panel presided over by Monia Adami, with Valentina Nuvoli and Paolo Bulla on her side, acquitted the 61-year-old mother and her 45-year-old son because the fact did not exist.
The two, who lived on the floor above the house shared with the elderly woman, according to the charges, would have, as soon as she became a widow and became owners of the property, disconnected the TV antenna, opened the door letting the cold in, then removed the chairs from her part of the apartment, changed the lock on the entrance door and put a padlock on the meter. They would then have imposed time limits on visits from the other children, positioned cameras in the house and imposed, the indictment reports, "an oppressive and domineering lifestyle, and thus made cohabitation intolerable" .
According to the prosecutor Ermanno Cattaneo, the defendants should be acquitted, while the civil party, represented by the lawyer Daniela Perinu, argued that the conduct of the daughter and nephew had restricted the woman's freedom, forcing her to leave. The two defense lawyers, Stefano Porcu and Giuseppe Scarpa, emphasized that none of the charges involved the crime of domestic abuse .
The lawyers explained some of their clients' choices, such as the cameras, because some objects in the house had been taken away by visitors, including the pellet stove that was supposed to heat. Furthermore, leaving the door open was due to the fact that many people came to the house when the Covid emergency was in full swing .
