Reservoirs in Sulcis are at maximum capacity , meaning a water crisis has been averted, but concerns are growing about the damage the water could cause, and in some cases has already caused.
Maximum attention is being paid to San Giovanni Suergiu and Tratalias , where in the last few hours the Monte Pranu reservoir reached its maximum capacity and began discharging water into the sea via the Rio Palmas. The mayors have already issued an alert, warning agricultural and pastoral businesses and all those living near the river to be careful due to the power of the flowing water.
The heavy rains of recent days have also brought floodwaters from the Bau Pressiu dam, which reached its maximum capacity as of Friday evening. In this case, the water overflowing from the dam is pouring into the Mannu River, which flows through much of the Lower Sulcis region. Indeed, the mayors of Narcao and Villaperuccio have issued a maximum alert, following a Civil Protection warning : the watercourse has swollen significantly, making it unsafe to approach the banks, drive through the area, or park near the river.
In San Giovanni Suergiu, last night's flood at Is Urigus damaged the scaffolding installed to secure the bridge over the Rio Santu Milano, which drains water from Carbonia into the Sant'Antioco lagoon. There's also considerable concern in Carbonia , where the same river, along with its tributary, the Rio Cannas, has been monitored.
