Sardinia is one of the regions where there is the greatest drop in implicit early school leaving, i.e. that which concerns students who finish the first cycle without having the necessary basic skills.

According to the data of the Invalsi 2023 Report presented today, the implicit dispersion stands at a national level at 8.7 percent (one point less than in 2022), in 2019 it was 7.5, in 2021 it was 9.8. In 2022 a slight turnaround with 9.7 percent.

If the initial estimates are confirmed by the results of the tests for future years, the share of young people aged between 18 and 24 who leave education and training prematurely without having obtained higher secondary school qualifications or professional qualifications with courses with a duration of at least two years it seems to be approaching the target set by the Pnrr at the end of 2025, 10.2%.

The greatest drop in implicit early school leaving is recorded in Calabria (-5 percentage points), Puglia (-2.9 percentage points), Sardinia (-2.8 percentage points) and Sicily (-2.4 percentage points). But the absolute differences at the territorial level remain very high: Campania (19%), Sardinia (15.9%), Sicily (13.6%), Calabria (13%) and Basilicata (10.6%).

«Implicit early school leaving tends to decrease and we are very pleased with this - comments the president of Invalsi, Roberto Ricci - the road is still long but the decrease is interesting. The fragility in professional institutes is stronger but there are very interesting exceptions such as Trento and Bolzano where we have significant shares of students at the highest levels also in professional education ».

According to Invalsi , 72% of the kids who had taken the eighth grade test in 2018, equal to 553,000 redundancies, reached the final exam . «And therefore 72% are regular in their studies, 10.8% are in school but not in the fifth year (in the fourth or previous years), about 57 thousand are missing, 27 thousand are in vocational training, 8 thousand have emigrated, 362 there is no information to understand where they can be inserted. The estimate of the missing, equal to 10.4%, is very close to the target set by the Pnrr which sets it at 10.2%; it's early to sing victory but it's still good news», concludes President Ricci.

Another worrying figure concerns the role of mathematics : in fact, the performance of Italian students worsens.

In the second grade, the results in Italian and in mathematics are lower than those of 2019 and 2021 and substantially in line with those of 2022. In mathematics, 1 out of 3 children does not reach the basic skills in either the second or fifth grade .

Then there are different results between schools and between classes especially in the southern regions, especially as regards Mathematics and the Listening test. This means - highlights the Invalsi institute - that primary school in the South struggles more to guarantee equal opportunities for all, with obvious negative effects on subsequent school grades. In second grade, in Italian about 69% (it was 72% in 2022) reaches at least the basic level (from band 3 upwards). Molise, Basilicata and Umbria are the regions with the highest quotas of students at least at the basic level, Calabria and Sicily those with the lowest quotas; In Mathematics around 64% (it was 70% in 2022) reach at least the basic level (from band 3 upwards). Molise, the Autonomous Province of Trento and Basilicata are the regions with the highest quotas of students at least at the basic level, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia are those with the lowest quotas.

In the fifth grade in Italian about 74% (it was 80% in 2022) reaches at least the basic level (from band 3 upwards). Molise, Umbria, Abruzzo and Friuli Venezia Giulia are the regions with the highest quotas of students at least at the basic level, Sicily is the one with the lowest quota; in Mathematics around 63% (it was 66% in 2022) reaches at least the basic level (from band 3 upwards). Umbria, Molise, the Autonomous Province of Trento and Friuli-Venezia Giulia are the regions with the highest quotas of students at least at the basic level, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia are those with the lowest quotas.

English results are also down compared to 2022. 87% (94% in 2022) of students reach the required A1 level of the CEFR in the reading test, while in the listening test it is 81% of students (85% in 2022) reach the prescribed level A1. Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia are the regions with the highest quotas of students who do not reach the A1 level in both the Reading and Listening tests.
