The plant for the treatment of sewage sludge financed with 8.5 million euros from the Pnrr will be built in the industrial area of Su Sparau, in the Serdiana area. The land, owned by Ecoserdiana, will be expropriated. The Municipality had established a partnership with the company that manages the Su Siccesu landfill for the construction of the plant. However, the agreement fell through due to Ecoserdiana's failure to submit the additional documentation. The identified area is located 2.5 km away from the town centre. The idea of building it in the industrial area of Su Pauleddu, a short distance from the town, has therefore been averted.

This possibility had been taken into consideration after the breakdown of the partnership between the Municipality and Ecoserdiana: «It was a necessary action – explains Mayor Cuccu – we were evaluating other municipal areas to avoid the expropriation of a private area. The discussions with the Ministry indicated the original site as the most suitable place for the realization of the project. Changing on the fly would have meant restarting the investigation and extending the time with the risk of losing part of the financing." Electricity and gas will be produced from the treatment of the sludge and will be used to self-power the plant. The waste, once treated, will instead become fertilizers for agriculture. An example of a circular economy in an area with a high agricultural vocation: instead of being disposed of, with significant costs for the community, waste will become a resource.

The plant must be completed by 31 December 2026. « We are on time – assures Cuccu – we have the feasibility project almost ready and we will shortly close the agreement with Invitalia for the integrated contract which includes the executive design, the construction of the plant and the awarding of concessions".
