Land of nuraghi, ancient churches and precious frescoes. Stories of knights and medieval intrigues, in an area where you can breathe the essence of Sardinia. All this is Semestene, a suggestive center of Meilogu with 129 inhabitants . A place to visit, even if far from the traditional tourist circuits. But unfortunately isolated, so much so that it has become a case.

The mobile phone network is practically absent: it is almost impossible to make calls or receive communications. We succeed, but only sometimes and not everywhere, on the WhatsApp platform. Then silence.

Mayor Antonella Buda , a courageous woman who has been running the administration since 2017, has tried everything to get the community out of this situation: letters to telephone companies, institutions, protest demonstrations. No way. For the telephone companies, up to now the logic of profit has prevailed over that of service. Of a service which, however, is essential for the citizens, made up mostly of elderly people. And what is a connection problem has also become a security problem for years.

" There is hope that the Region will continue its initiatives to improve communication in small municipalities with targeted projects" , explains Buda. Who adds: «For the rest, I will try once again to solicit the main telephone companies. Emphasizing the question of safety".

The problems for the small center do not end with telephony. In the transport sector, the connection with road 131 has been interrupted for works since April 2021. To reach the main Sardinian artery, residents are forced to take a long and tortuous journey.

«I understand the importance and complexity of this work - specifies Antonella Buda -. But we hope that the work will be completed as soon as possible ».

In this case Semestene is in good company. The road that goes from Sassari to Cagliari (and vice versa) is in fact dotted with works that appear interminable.
