In Sardinia there is almost a water emergency. This is stated in the monitoring tables carried out every month by the Basin Authority, updated to 31 December. The artificial reservoirs of the island's multi-sector water system currently contain 49.7% of the maximum capacity, i.e. 906.36 million cubic meters out of a maximum authorized volume of 1824 million cubic meters of water. A figure, to get an idea of the difficulty of the situation: a year ago in the same period the percentage was 60.21%, with 1098.29 million cubic meters stored. The graphics show a curve on the threshold of the red phase, that of the danger for supplies. And it is not certain that the rains of these days will be enough to fill the gap.

The greatest critical issues occur in Sulcis, with the water system of the upper Cixerri at 8.9% (a water shortage made up today by the Monte Pranu reservoir at 58.3%). The entire northern part of the island is also in trouble with the North Western water system reaching 24.5% and the Maccheronis dam in Posada which is just over 13%. Things are no better in Ogliastra: the Bau Muggeris (Flumendosa) and Santa Lucia reservoirs overall reach 25.8% of the maximum capacity of the two basins.

For all of these, the status indicator for drought monitoring and early warning in December 2023 registers the red "emergency" sign. This means that in addition to activating further restrictions on disbursements "the average disbursement eligible under the ordinary regime must be re-evaluated". Translated: less water for non-domestic uses.

The situation in the center and south of the island is buffered by the 630.34 million cubic meters of water (57.6% of the total capacity of the reservoirs) present in the Tirso-Flumendosa water system - the largest in Sardinia - and, for the the northern part is the Liscia dam with its 71.4 million cubic meters equal to 68.7% of the reservoir capacity.
