With 482 doctors per 100 thousand inhabitants, Sardinia is the region with the highest number of doctors in relation to the population. These are Eurostat-Openpolis figures for 2019, and if - with a pandemic in the middle - the proportion has decreased three years later, on paper the advantage over the rest of the country remains.

But these are numbers on paper, as medical associations and unions denounce. Because the island has to deal with the distribution of the population, the orography of the territory and, above all, the quality of assistance.

“Any comparison with other regions is unthinkable, I would say out of reality”, warns Giovanni Marco Ruggiu, president of the Mèigos association. “We have the lowest birth rate, the resumption of youth emigration, an increasing aging of the population. What comparisons do we want to make? It is clear that, with a population of just under one million and 600 thousand inhabitants distributed in 377 municipalities, guarding the territory is much more demanding than elsewhere ".
