With one wing out of order, injured and in difficulty, a European Shag, a protected bird species, attracted the attention of the many bathers who crowded Balai beach in Porto Torres this morning.

It was found by a citizen while he was wandering among the umbrellas to the amazement of those present. Many tried to take care of the bird unable to fly. «We tried to involve associations and local authorities, but nothing, they tell us that it is not their responsibility», explains one of the bathers, «we need an expert capable of taking him with the necessary precautions to transport him to Bonassai, the recovery center of injured wildlife."

The animal, after wandering on the beach, managed to reach the sea in search of food. The European Shag, however, found it difficult to take off by swimming with only the push of its legs to capture the prey. This is a species that has a favorable conservation status in Europe, but the Mediterranean populations appear to be in decline overall. Furthermore, special conservation measures regarding the habitat are envisaged for the bird.
