Helicopter and patrol boats in action to save shipwrecked people: the exercise at Poetto
In the first six months of the year alone, 13 people died, almost double compared to the same period in 2023, and the cause is often carelessnessA low-flying helicopter and patrol boats in front of the small port of Marina Piccola : the smoke signal signals the presence of a shipwrecked person and in a few moments the rescuers from the Harbor Office recover him , bringing him to safety. Coast Guard Day took place this morning in the setting of Poetto in Cagliari on the occasion of the 159th anniversary of the Port Authority corps.
In addition to the exercise with the recovery of shipwrecked people, by the soldiers of the Cagliari Coast Guard, the rescue dogs of the Italian school went into action : together with their companion they reached people who were in danger of drowning, bringing them back to shore. All under the curious eyes of many swimmers and especially children, fascinated and enthusiastic in seeing the dogs in action who save human lives with their skills and abilities (such as that of sensing sea currents).
And in the first part of the walk in Marina Piccola, on a day with lots of swimmers, the soldiers of the Harbor Office gave advice on boats, on nautical licenses, on blue stickers .
«The sea can be treacherous. We must therefore respect a few but indispensable rules to avoid taking risks and to avoid incurring sanctions when driving a vessel", highlighted the commander of the Cagliari Coast Guard, Giovanni Stella.
The data for these first six months speak of 13 deceased people (the Cagliari Captaincy is responsible for the stretch of coast from Arbatax to Bosa, passing through Cagliari) compared to 7 in the same period last year and 6 in 2022. The number of deaths is decreasing. rescues: 48 (in 2023 there were 62, while in 2022 there were 66). There were 50 sanctions on recreational boats: ten fewer than in 2023, while in 2022 there were 51.
