Mario Masala, a 40-year-old from Sassari, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for running over and killing Tonino Pirastru, a pensioner and his neighbor, with his van in Porto Cervo on July 3, 2024.
Prosecutor Milena Aucone had asked for 16 years.
The sentence, at the conclusion of the summary trial for voluntary manslaughter, was issued by the investigating judge of the Tempio Tribunal , Alessandro Cossu. Masala is represented by lawyers Nicola Satta and Giancarlo Frongia.
The verdict doesn't satisfy the victim's family, who filed a civil suit with lawyers Elias Vacca and Ezia Orecchioni: "An unfair sentence," commented Mario Pirastru, Tonino's brother. "You can't deliberately kill someone who's only 12 years old. There were some disagreements, but you don't kill someone for something like that."
