The trial of Salvatore Franceschi, 59, from Oliena, accused of matricide, began today before the Nuoro Assize Court.

The self-confessed bricklayer caused fatal injuries to his 88-year-old mother Luigina Fois on November 7, 2022, by repeatedly hitting her with an ax following an argument in their home in Oliena.

After being admitted to the intensive care unit of the San Francesco hospital in Nuoro, the elderly woman died on 2 January 2023.

During the hearing, the defendant's defender, Pasqualino Moi, gave his consent for the Court to acquire all the documents contained in the prosecutor Riccardo Belfiori's file. A move that aims to reduce the time of the trial and to have Franceschi recognize the generic extenuating circumstances due to the confession, good behavior and the man's difficult social condition, linked to alcohol addiction. The trial was adjourned until March 25 when the parties will discuss it.

On November 7th two years ago it was Franceschi himself who called 118 and explained to the doctors that he had found his mother lying on the floor in the house "perhaps following a fall". But the fifty-nine-year-old, questioned by the police immediately, had provided an unclear reconstruction of what was reported as a domestic incident. Two weeks later, overcome by pangs of conscience, he confessed before the prosecutor. Since then Franceschi has been locked up in the Badu 'e Carros prison in Nuoro.
