Ten years after the devastating fire that hit the Ghilarza area and in which the farmer Ubaldo Miscali lost his life, the City Council wanted to recall those tragic events with a document proposed to the classroom by the councilor Paola Flore. The idea is to name a street or a square or a municipal structure after Ubaldo Miscali, who died after days of agony. He had tried to get the cattle to safety.

Referring to the fires that are devastating the island again this year, it was highlighted: «Even Ghilarza has had its damage and its deaths due to this scourge that Sardinia has been carrying around for centuries. Ten years after those tragic events it is necessary to remind our fellow citizens and all Sardinians of one of the saddest days for our community », recalled the councilor. And he continued: «Around 12 noon on 7 August 2013, a vast fire, which started from the border with a neighboring town, facilitated by the strong wind and scorching temperatures, swept through the Ghilarza countryside, devastating and burning 80% of the territory of our country and also touching some houses located in the suburbs. The fire, of an arson nature, destroyed about 44 square kilometers of territory, out of a total of 55 . Almost all of the land burned down», says Flore, «was privately owned. The flames more than 30 meters high were only put out the next afternoon. The material damage to the countryside and to businesses was incalculable, but the greatest damage that our community had to suffer was the loss of a human life, that of Ubaldo Miscali, who was run over in an attempt to save his livestock from the flames and died after 24 days of agony».

The courtroom then recalled Miscali who « courageously didn't hesitate to throw himself into the flames to save his animals . Victim of a murderous hand but also a victim of work. That work that he carried out with abnegation, for which he gave his life to save his animals and his capital. Ubaldo is to be remembered as an example of attachment to his profession as a farmer , dedicated to those sacrifices that every farm worker faces every day and also for his great humanity».

Hence the desire to name a street or a square or a municipal structure after him. The Council was also reminded that, although a state of disaster has been declared, no response is activated by the competent bodies. "Of those tragic moments", it was highlighted, " we remember the solidarity of the Sardinian farmers, who from all parts of Sardinia donated part of their hay supplies to help the Ghilarza farms affected ".
