From Palermo to Tortolì, the Falcone Tree also lives in the garden of the central primary school in Viale Monsignor Virgilio. A symbol of legality and the fight against mafia but also a concrete action for the protection of the environment. The comprehensive institute I directed by Santina Castrogiovanni is one of the Italian schools that has joined the national project A tree for the future. Some buds of the famous ficus located in via Notarbartolo, in front of what was the house of the judge murdered in 1992 by the mafia, were planted in a ceremony which saw the participation of the young students, their parents and teachers. The municipal councilor for public education Irene Murru and numerous authorities were also there.

The cuttings were delivered by the Carabinieri biodiversity group of Palermo who illustrated the objective of the project: these trees will contribute to forming the "Great widespread forest" made up of the young plants planted by all the students and which will be visible on a web platform that will monitor growth and storage of CO2.

The project that led to the school joining this initiative was carried out by teachers Daniela Deiana and Caterina Piu. During the morning the children read quotes and poems dedicated to Falcone and Borsellino. Other cuttings will be planted tomorrow in the secondary school garden.

«These trees will remind all of us and the students of our school, today and tomorrow, that legality must be planted, cared for and defended» commented the head teacher.
