Thirty-nine years after the fire that broke out in the Curraggia hill around Tempio Pausania in 1983, destroying over 18,000 hectares and causing nine victims among the volunteers who fought to put out the flames, the Region established, with a regional law, that on 28 July is the commemorative day and an opportunity to pay tribute to all those who have lost their lives or suffered serious damage in the many and devastating fires that have occurred on the island since the war.
The commemoration ceremony was held today in Tempio together with the mayor , other local administrators and civil, military and religious authorities. Representing the president Christian Solinas were the regional councilors for public education, Andrea Biancareddu, and for the defense of the environment, Gianni Lampis.
"Even if 39 years have passed, that of Curraggia remains a huge tragedy that shocked the whole of Sardinia , leaving indelible memories in the direct protagonists of that dramatic day, especially in the families of the fallen and injured. It is important to remember to pay the due homage to those who have lost their lives by committing themselves to the community ", Biancareddu said.
"The regional institutions have been heavily involved in fires for years due to the terrible consequences caused to human life and the island's natural heritage - added Lampis - Therefore, every summer, an imposing regional fire-fighting machine is set up which, year after year, thanks to a growing professional capacity, he is able to contain the devastating effects of this plague that has afflicted Sardinia for too long and that we must fight with all available means ".
" An aspect that should not be underestimated is education , through a cultural battle that we must consolidate in schools. Young people are the future protagonists of actions for the respect and protection of the environment in Sardinia, starting with the fight against fires", they concluded. the exponents of the Giunta Solinas.
