There were moments of fear late yesterday afternoon in the Sa Tanchitta area, where a brush fire engulfed a dilapidated structure adjacent to a residential building.
Inside, two elderly disabled people were trapped in the flames and smoke. They were rescued by two assistant chiefs of the Sinnai Forestry Corps, who quickly responded to the scene.
It was 5:30 PM when the Bruncu Su Soli fire lookout raised the alarm. The forest patrol reached the area within minutes to assess the extent of the fire. Once there, the officers were approached by a very agitated man, who informed them that his in-laws—both disabled—were inside the smoke-filled shack.
Without hesitation, the two forest rangers scaled the fence and forced open the front door, entering the now smoke-filled building. They found the two elderly people at the back of the building, far from the flames but in critical condition: one of them was already on the ground, helpless.
Rescuers picked them up and carried them outside to safety, removing them from the danger zone. Shortly thereafter, they were handed over to emergency personnel for treatment. The timely intervention prevented further damage. The fire, which had rapidly spread to nearby brushwood, was then contained and extinguished.
