Mario Casu , regional president of the Italian Sports Centre , a sports promotion body founded in the 1940s in the capital of Sassari by Antonio Segni and Francesco Cossiga, former presidents of the Republic, died this morning in Sassari at the age of 78 .
Casu's death represents a great loss for Sassari and for the Island, having contributed over the decades to the growth of sports practice, first as a manager of the Sant'Apollinare association, founded around 1980, then with the Csi, of which he led the city committee from 2008 to 2016, to then become, as written, the regional president, a position for which he would also have run again in the next elections scheduled for February.
"Mario - says Giuseppe Porqueddu, president of the Sassari committee - was a man whose philosophy was to make sports accessible to everyone. He believed in inclusion, in projects for people with disabilities. One, wanted by him, was recently funded by the Region". But he always supported another concept: "He wanted to fight bad teachers, those who are only interested in the result, who don't care about making their students grow".
Casu also had a passion for archives because "he said that without the past you cannot create the future."
