The funds will barely cover May salaries. Furthermore, the future of Eurallumina remains a major question mark . This announcement was made by the company itself, managed by the State Property Agency following the European Union's freeze on the assets of its Russian partner Rusal in May 2023. Workers' salaries should be guaranteed until May 27, but beyond that date, no further financial resources are available to support the company's commitments.
Filctem-Cgil, Femca-Cisl, and Uiltec-Uil del Sulcis Iglesiente have denounced the gravity of the situation: "The Eurallumina dispute is seriously at risk of reaching the point of no return ." After the latest meeting at the Portovesme plant, convened by Confindustria Sardegna Meridionale, the unions described a "very serious" situation , which "no longer allows for institutional silence or further delays." According to what has emerged, the depletion of funds could have knock-on effects on social security contributions, suppliers, contracts, and utilities, further jeopardizing the plant's environmental and safety activities.
Among the main concerns is the possible interruption of the extraction of groundwater through the hydraulic barrier and the subsequent water treatment , operations considered essential to avoid irreversible environmental damage to the industrial area and the surrounding territory.
The situation, as mentioned, remains unstable. "The period from January to February 2026 was supported by the company's own resources, while the following period, from March to April, was financed by drawing on the remaining ministerial funds for the 2025 financial year, which have now been completely exhausted. To date," the unions continue, " no specific budget item has been allocated in the 2026 Budget Law to cover the operating costs resulting from the freeze, despite the reassurances received in recent months and the commitments made by the Minister himself to the Ministry of Mimit, announcing the allocation of €9.6 million for the operational management of the plant. This procedure represents a bridging solution while awaiting developments in discussions within the Financial Security Committee (CSF), aimed at reaching a definitive resolution to revoke the currently applicable sanctions regime."
