In the last 5 years, 8,700 Sardinians have left the island to go and live and work abroad . Almost two thousand (1,867 to be precise) in the last year , an escape with a suitcase full of hope photographed in the Report Italians in the World 2024 of the Migrantes Foundation, presented this morning in Rome.

As for Sardinia, the region where the fewest children are born (just 7,231 in 2023 , a fertility rate now down to 0.91: less than one child per woman, against a national average of 1.20), the Migrantes report - which reports and re-elaborates Istat and Aire data - as of January 1, 2024 (when the island has 1,569,832 residents), the Sardinians registered in the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad are 130,217 (exactly 1,867 more than in 2023), of which 47.2% are women .

A quarter (25.7%) of our fellow countrymen abroad are between 35 and 49 years old. 22.5% are in the 18-34 age bracket; 21.9% are 50-64; 17.7% are over 65, while the children and teenagers (0-17 years) bracket accounts for 12.2% . It must be said, and this is a very interesting fact, that 30.8% of Sardinians abroad registered with AIRE are registered because they were born in their parents' country of immigration.

But which are the countries where Sardinians settle? Germany is in first place. Followed by France, Belgium, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Netherlands, Spain, Argentina, United States of America and Brazil .

As regards the municipalities of departure of emigrants abroad, Cagliari – to remain in the first ten in the ranking – has the highest number of people registered with AIRE, then there are Sassari, Carbonia, Quartu Sant'Elena, Alghero, Olbia, Siniscola, Nuoro, Oristano, Iglesias .

If we take into account the incidence of emigrants abroad (those registered with AIRE) on the resident population, Bidonì comes in first place with 110 emigrants out of 122 residents (90.2% of the resident population).

Sindia follows, with 1,026 registered abroad out of 1,586 residents (64.7%); Senis with 240 emigrants out of 386 residents (62.2%); Ballao: 394 out of 718 residents (54.9%); Montresta: 241 out of 443 residents (54.4%) .
