Elderly residents in 28 municipalities at an anti-fraud lesson. The meetings were organized by the Carabinieri of the Sanluri company: more than 340 older people participated, demonstrating a keen interest and appreciation for the initiative, which, promoted by the Carabinieri, is part of a more broad framework of activities aimed at ensuring safety.

The elderly represent one of the most vulnerable categories to scams and fraud, which is why this type of meeting is organized throughout the Cagliari area with the precise aim of providing those who participate with the necessary tools to defend themselves from scammers and, more generally, promote a culture of good practices to increase your safety.

The conferences took place in 28 different municipalities, offering a widespread opportunity for information and training. Each meeting was structured to encourage the understanding and participation of the elderly, with moments of dialogue and answers to specific questions.

The topics covered were carefully chosen, analyzing the most common types of scams that, even recently, have affected this segment of the population: door-to-door scams, telephone scams, online scams, identity theft. The methods most used by scammers to deceive the elderly, even directly in their homes, were illustrated, explaining how to recognize the danger signs and the precautions to take to avoid falling for these scams. A particular focus was dedicated to fraudulent calls, in which malicious people pose as members of the police force, service operators or relatives in difficulty.

Participants learned how to verify the authenticity of calls and what to do in case of suspicion. With the growing diffusion of the internet and the need that even the elderly have to use its now indispensable services, online scams have become a significant problem. Advice was provided on how to navigate safely, recognize fraudulent sites and emails, and protect your personal data.

Seniors were informed about the risks of identity theft and how to protect their sensitive information. The signs of possible identity theft and the actions to take in case of suspicion were illustrated. In addition to addressing specific types of scams, the conferences offered a series of general best practices for increasing the personal safety of older adults. Among these, the importance of maintaining a network of trusted contacts, of not publishing personal information through social media, even with simple reference to periods in which one leaves home for holidays, and of promptly reporting any suspicious activity to the police of the order. The feedback from participants was extremely positive and many highlighted the importance of initiatives such as these, which not only inform, but also reassure and strengthen the sense of safety in the community.

The Carabinieri, in thanking all the participants in these meetings, undertakes to continue on this path, planning further initiatives to ensure greater safety and awareness among citizens. For further information and advice: click here .
