The food was thrown away in bags, among other rubbish, in an abandoned lot. The bitter discovery was made on Via San Francesco, behind the cemetery in Quartu, where some "indigent" person, after receiving a package of food distributed by Vincentian volunteers, Caritas, and so on, decided to throw away the contents, without considering those who might actually need it. Thus, bread, milk, and biscuits, carefully packaged and sealed, ended up where no one can get them anymore.

"Faced with these things, one feels only great suffering," says the parish priest of the Basilica of Sant'Elena, Don Alfredo Fadda. "Throwing away the food that is bought and collected is a great pain. It often shows that some poor people aren't poor because otherwise they wouldn't throw away food."

In light of this, "from now on, we will proceed more carefully and conduct a very serious investigation. The Vincentians and other organizations do an enormous amount of work, and we will not be deterred by these things that only break our hearts." The Vincentian conferences in the city's seven parishes serve approximately 600 families. Added to these are the 40 guests of the Wayfarer's Soup Kitchen and the many people who visit the Poor Man's Closet twice a week to collect their clothes.
