The municipal commissioner of Nuoro, Giovanni Pirisi, has declared a state of natural disaster due to the persistent water deficit and the consequences for the livestock sector, following the serious drought emergency that is affecting the province. The decision comes after the press release of January 9 by the sole operator Abbanoa, which announced the activation of a rationing plan for Nuoro and 16 other municipalities in the province, starting from January 27.
The water restrictions will lead to alternate-day closures of the water system, generating significant inconvenience for the population and the potential closure of schools, public buildings and businesses. In particular, Commissioner Pirisi highlighted that the water restrictions could have serious repercussions on public services, declaring: "The water rationing plan includes closures that could also involve schools, with the concrete risk of interrupting school activities on some days. This would cause enormous inconvenience for families and the entire community."
The same measure, with the feared risk of school closures, was also taken by the municipality of Mamoiada. The commissioner referred to Resolution 130 of 4 July 2024, with which a state of calamity had already been declared due to the persistent drought, and decided to integrate this declaration, extending it specifically to the inconveniences resulting from drinking water rationing .
The resolution highlights that rationing will have a direct impact on the daily lives of citizens, with concrete risks for public health, education and commercial activity. According to Regional Law 28 of 1985, local authorities must declare a state of calamity and quantify the work needed to deal with the emergency, subsequently submitting an application for funding for restoration work.
The Municipal Administration has therefore ordered an assessment to be started to identify the actions to be taken in order to limit the damage resulting from the water shortage and the resulting inconveniences. The municipal body has also given the competent offices the mandate to calculate the costs of the necessary works and initiatives to be launched to mitigate the effects of the emergency, with particular attention to the protection of the population and the livestock sector, which is heavily penalized by the water shortage. The Municipality of Nuoro, therefore, continues its commitment to address a crisis that transversally affects various sectors vital to the city and its territory, seeking timely solutions to limit the damage and provide concrete answers to citizens.
