Eliminating water losses in the distribution network: this is the ultimate goal of the new project by the Consorzio di Bonifica del Nord Sardegna. 8.5 million euros have been allocated for the work. A study by Cgia di Mestre indicated Sassari as 11th in the Italian ranking for the amount of water lost on the way to the final consumer: 63.4% does not reach its destination but is lost in leaky networks (2022 data). Also according to the study, Sardinia is the fourth region in Italy for water losses with 52.8% of the resource introduced into the network that is lost in the distribution network that has seen very little maintenance over time.
The productive sector that consumes the most water is agriculture: in Italy, 41% in 2023 was allocated to agriculture. For this reason, the Consortium for the reclamation of Northern Sardinia, which has long since started monitoring the critical issues affecting the districts under its jurisdiction, obtained two important results yesterday because the Chilivani offices awarded works for a sum of 8.5 million specifically to intervene on the leaky pipes. It also published a call for tenders to intervene on the old fibre cement pipes of the Perfugas district. «The awarded works concern the extraordinary maintenance and improvement of a monitoring system of the quantity of irrigation water in the districts of the Chilivani plain, that of Perfugas and the Lower Coghinas Valley (Extraordinary maintenance and implementation of a monitoring system of irrigation volumes on hydraulic interception works of the irrigation districts) - explains Toni Stangoni, president of the Consortium - entirely financed by the Ministry of Agriculture».
"These are very important works that will allow the complete reconstruction of the now dilapidated and deteriorated distribution systems, as well as an essential monitoring system for the control of the water resource. The Land Reclamation Consortium, as an instrumental body of the Region, operating in the territory, has worked in recent years to obtain the necessary resources and intervene as soon as possible on the critical issues".
