Councilor Carlo Doria returns to the topic of Microcitemico after the controversies of recent days following the table in which the leaders of ASL 8, which heads the Microcitemico, and Arnas Brotzu reported on the situation complained of by an association on the times of waiting for the removal of the central venous catheters necessary for the treatment of young patients in the Oncohaematology department of the pediatric hospital in Cagliari.

"As regional health councilor, I have the responsibility and duty to do everything in my power for citizens who need assistance and for those who are committed every day to guaranteeing treatment in hospitals or in the area - underlines Doria -. At Microcitemico, as well as in any other hospital in our healthcare system, the removal of central venous catheters, as well as their application, corresponds to an activity that must be rigorously registered at least for medico-legal reasons. We are not talking about simple bureaucracy, patient safety is at stake. In this case the data presented by Arnas Brotzu and by the ASL 8 on the services requested and those performed are incontrovertible. Starting from the fact that we can speak of "waiting" only when we can measure the time necessary between the request for a service and its execution, as it is possible to speak of patients who wait up to three months for the removal of a catheter if there is not even a trace of these requests? The same association that raised the issue admits that the young "waiting" patients would not be on any list. We are talking about traceability which is a legal obligation. I repeat, in June it appears that similar requests were regularly taken care of and that the removal of venous catheters from the young patients took place within a week in a planned regime. Obviously something is not right."

The commissioner adds: «On the other hand, I find the attempt at exploitation and political looting by some exponents who, evidently, pursue interests other than the good of the patients, unspeakable and low-level. Such an important issue cannot be reduced to sterile controversies and, as I have already said, it is not important whether the Cao hospital belongs to Arnas Brotzu or ASL 8, it only matters what is done inside that hospital and the Microcitemico is a reference center for pediatric care, not only oncohematology. Since the first days of the transfer of Microcitemico to ASL 8, in January 2022, Arnas has continued to guarantee its support in pediatric activity, both in surgical and medical elections, and in emergencies and urgencies. In this period, Arnas guaranteed the support activity for the positioning and removal of the central venous catheters of the patients in charge of the Oncohaematology department and the Microcytemic Apheresis, as well as the services of the Bone Marrow Transplant Centre. Since 1 January 2023, the Arnas doctors have carried out three services in the bone marrow transplant center, nineteen central venous catheter placements and thirteen removals, three sedation exams for nuclear medicine, as well as guaranteeing pediatric activity in orthopedic surgery and in maxillofacial, interventional cardiology, neurosurgery and diagnostic imaging. Our health care must operate in a system logic and the Cao hospital is an excellence that we will continue to defend exclusively for the good of the young patients".
