"Together with Sonam Sherpa, I finally reached Manaslu Base Camp," announced Ivan Pirina, 49, the doctor-climber from Arzachena on his "journey" to the summit of Manaslu (8,163 meters) in Nepal. "It wasn't easy," he continued, "but good things almost never are. I will do my utmost to ensure that this is not the end point, but the starting point, to carry the flag of our municipality to the summit." The update on Ivan Pirina's climb was posted on the Arzachena Municipality's social media page. A few days earlier, Pirina had been at 5,100 meters above sea level.
"Today was a very busy day for my expedition," he wrote. "We set out from Bimthang at about 3,600m to climb the Larke Pass at over 5,100m, and after 21km, arrive at Samdo at about 3,900m. The weather also complicated things, with freezing rain that accompanied us for almost the entire day." The Arzachena doctor thus continues his efforts and is now preparing for the most difficult and demanding part of the mission.
On August 28th, Ivan Pirina presented the undertaking in Piazza Risorgimento, during a public meeting moderated by Isabella Chiodino and Councilor Claudia Giagoni, who presented him with the Arzachena flag to fly atop the Nepalese mountain. Ivan Pirina is also the doctor for an expedition that presents considerable challenges, both due to the steep climbs, particularly at high altitude, and the variable and adverse weather conditions, primarily the bitter cold. For this reason, they are equipped with appropriate equipment (in addition to the technical equipment required for this type of climb), which is necessarily heavy and cumbersome, starting with a goose-down suit weighing approximately 5 kg, suitable for temperatures down to -50 degrees Celsius; followed by two boots, each weighing approximately 2.5 kg, which keep their feet warm down to -40 degrees Celsius; all of this, Ivan Pirina emphasized, while still being active. when stationary there are other essential precautions to adopt.
