Iglesias as Acapulco . The Porto Flavia area will host the deep sea diving. The historic event has been "torn" from the Amalfi Coast: meeting on 6 and 7 July, the best divers in the world will give life to the "MarMeeting Porto Flavia 2024" . A defeat for Furore (the Campania town which hosted the event for over twenty years), a great showcase for Iglesias which, on the occasion of the celebrations for the centenary of the Porto Flavia Gallery, offers itself an event with an international scope and which in Italy provides only two appointments per year (the other is in Polignano a Mare). Mayor Mauro Usai is anticipating what will happen with a video published on social media: a diver performs perfect evolutions by launching himself from the entrance plate of the tunnel. «Spolier», comments the mayor.

The choice

«“MarMeeting” - explains the president of the company Franco Varese - was born in 1985 as an event that intended to combine the promotion of the territory with sport. In 1996 the first championship took place in Furore with a platform which, for the first time ever, was built at 26 metres". Until 2019, the event created by the Varese family represents one of the most awaited international events in the world of high-diving discipline: «Then there was a lack - continues Varese - of institutional support to be able to continue the partnership. Support instead came from the Municipality of Iglesias. From the first inspection carried out in September, we immediately glimpsed the potential of a site of unparalleled beauty, perfect for this discipline which should also make its debut at the 2028 Olympics . I hope it is the first event in a long series that can lead to a a fixture on the Red Bull world circuit."

The race

There will be 24 athletes who, from above the mouth of the Porto Flavia Tunnel, will battle from a platform positioned 27 meters above the sea surface for the men's category and 20 for the women's category. Coming from all over the world, Varese reveals: «As soon as they viewed the images of the place, so many requests to participate poured in. Clearly the choice was then made taking into consideration above all the ranking." The event will be broadcast by RaiSport and worldwide in live streaming from the organisation's official platform. An initiative that required several months of preparation, the organizational apparatus is still at work and intends to be able to show the spectacular dives to as many spectators as possible. The audience will be that of the special occasions and the stretch of sea on the cliff of the south-west coast will be the center of attention for two days.

The common

«We are working with the organization - reveals the municipal councilor for Sport Vito Spiga - to ensure the greatest possible visibility. There will be many boats dedicated to hosting the public. It will be a showcase for tourism promotion with few precedents, it will give the area the opportunity to be seen from a different perspective which, I hope, will have an economic and image impact for the city". For mayor Mauro Usai, “MarMeeting” demonstrates the attention towards the valorization of the mining heritage: «Being able to host such an event which takes place in only one other Italian location makes us even more protagonists. I think it is one of the best ways to celebrate the centenary of Porto Flavia."
