An area of approximately three hectares transformed into an illegal landfill , with waste of all kinds—including hazardous waste—and repeated incidents of illegal burning. This is what the Carabinieri discovered during an extraordinary territorial control operation that resulted in two arrests and two charges.

The operation began on Tuesday afternoon in Decimomannu and was conducted by the local station , with the support of the Mobile Radio Unit of the Iglesias company, colleagues from San Sperate and Uta, and the Ecological Operations Unit (NOE) of Cagliari. The contribution of the 11th Carabinieri Helicopter Unit was also crucial, allowing them to identify from above the extent of the area used as an illegal landfill.

Following the investigation, two men, aged 46 and 20, residents of the municipality and already known to law enforcement, were arrested for illegal waste burning and unauthorized management of an illegal landfill. According to investigators' findings, the two men played a direct role in the illegal disposal and burning of the accumulated materials.

Two other people have also been charged at large: a 47-year-old woman, owner of a sole proprietorship and the registered owner of a truck used for waste transportation, and a 22-year-old man, believed to be responsible for several waste fires that occurred between December 14th and 15th.

During the operation, the Carabinieri also discovered several dilapidated shacks used as animal shelters, kept in precarious sanitary conditions. Staff from the Cagliari Local Health Authority (ASL) arrived on site to conduct investigations. The animals were subsequently entrusted to relatives of the suspects, subject to specific health requirements.

The entire area affected by the illegal activities was placed under lockdown. After the usual formalities, the two arrested individuals were transferred to Uta prison, where they will be held by the judicial authorities.
