The Regional Council, acting on a proposal from Environmental Protection Councillor Rosanna Laconi, approved the resolution authorizing mining in two quarries in Orgosolo, which will be used to complete the Cumbidanovu dam on the Alto Cedrino.
The project, worth approximately €2.46 million and funded by the Region, will allow the extraction of materials essential for the production of concrete and the ancillary works for the dam. The quarries, located in areas that will be submerged by the future reservoir, will therefore be of a purely temporary nature.
"With this act," the councilor stated, "we are finally giving the green light to resume work on the Cumbidanovu dam, a project that residents and farmers have been waiting for for over thirty years. Authorizing the quarries means providing the essential materials to continue construction of the dam and, at the same time, preparing spaces that, once the work is completed, will become an integral part of the reservoir intended to collect the water. The goal is clear: to complete the dam and provide the area with a vital resource for agriculture, water security, and development."
The dam, designed in the 1970s and begun in 1989, will provide new water resources for irrigation in the Orgosolo, Oliena, Nuoro, Dorgali, Orune, and Lula areas, boosting agricultural productivity and water security across a vast territory. The last interruption was in 2013, when Cyclone Cleopatra destroyed the construction site. Today, with the authorization of the quarries, the foundations are being laid for the effective resumption of work. The environmental review process concluded with the exclusion from the EIA process, but with specific requirements aimed at ensuring the protection of soil, water, and the landscape, as well as the reduction of noise impacts and an environmental monitoring plan. The exploitation work must be completed within five years of the publication of the resolution and will be subject to inspections by the competent local authorities.
