«The presence of free cats in the area has recently taken on critical characteristics, which require greater attention to the well-being and health of the animals». The resolution of the Regional Council which allocates 100 thousand euros to start a sterilization campaign for cats in cat colonies scattered throughout Sardinia starts from this premise.

The Oristano Local Health Authority will be responsible for organizing the campaign for the whole island and will shortly issue a notice aimed at all the associations that manage groups of cats.

The resolution states «that feline colonies, if not subjected to control, due to excessive proliferation may in turn cause the onset of hygienic-sanitary problems, linked to the high density which favors the spread of diseases of the species even in zoonotic character, as well as negatively affecting the environment due to excessive fecalization and soiling of the soil".

For sterilization, priority will be given to "recognized feline colonies, subordinate to the colonies for which the recognition procedure has been started and finally residually to owner cats".
