Coldiretti: farmers' protest in Cagliari. Over 2 thousand people in the square
Water crisis, damage caused by wildlife and excessive bureaucracy are the issues at the center of the claimsThe high temperatures did not scare the over 2 thousand people who arrived from the Sardinian countryside this morning in Cagliari for the Coldiretti demonstration .
The procession started from Piazza del Carmine and arrived in Piazzale Trento where speeches are underway by politicians and representatives of Coldiretti, but also by mayors: over 100 arrived from various parts of the island.
Protesters coming from every corner of the island denounce the very serious water crisis which led to the declaration of a state of emergency . The animals risk death due to the lack of water and fodder, and the crops, especially in southern Sardinia, are exhausted. In addition to the drought, farmers complain about the damage caused by wildlife, which has become increasingly difficult to manage, and the excessive bureaucracy that has plagued the agricultural sector over the past two decades.
The request to the new council, which has just taken office, is clear: a change of pace and particular attention to agriculture. «This is not just a protest demonstration, but also a proposal», says Luca Saba, director of Coldiretti Sardinia. «Farmers are asking for the elimination of bureaucracy, urgent interventions to renew and reprogram the agricultural sector, and the real centrality of agriculture in regional planning. Despite the promises made during the electoral campaign by the various councils, these have always been disregarded."
Also in the square were the Prime Minister, Piero Comandini, the councilor for agriculture, Satta, and the councilors for Transport and the Environment, Manca and Laconi. Now the rural world hopes that the Region will give agriculture the reform and reprogramming necessary for the next twenty years.
