Sardinia rises from fifteenth to tenth place with 406 crimes (+172.5% on 2022) in the ranking of the most widespread crimes on the coasts related to concrete, according to the ranking drawn up in the Mare Nostrum report by Legambiente: a dossier with which every year the environmental association takes a snapshot of the criminal aggression on the coasts and the sea of our country".
Cement and coasts
However, if we continue with the analysis of the document, the news on the Island can be read in two ways. The first: in one year almost double the crimes were discovered (from illegal building to illegal occupation of state maritime property to illegal quarries). So the attack on the environment exists. But it could also mean that controls have increased, or have become more effective. So much so that, Legambiente says, Sardinia «is also the region with the most arrests (7) and the first for the value of sanctions, well over 7.6 million euros».
Waste and discharges
The concrete along the coasts is “added” to the abandonment and illegal disposal of waste, discharges into the sea and “poor purification”. First place in the ranking for crimes of this type goes to Campania. Sardinia rises to fifth place: it was eleventh last year. This happens «due to the 580 criminal offenses ascertained by law enforcement and Port Authorities, with a leap forward of 417.9% in one year». The crimes discovered have more than quadrupled.
Violations of the navigation code
While the phenomenon of illegal fishing remains contained, for the Island Legambiente records a boom in "Violations of the recreational boating navigation code". Sicily stands out with 306 criminal offenses (+117%), followed by Campania with 281 offenses (+319.4%). Then it's Sardinia's turn: 271 crimes discovered, with a + 1,593.8%: a figure fifteen times higher than the previous year. More controls or more crafty people of the sea?
