The spectre of a new epidemic chills the blood of breeders.
The outbreak of contagious nodular skin disease discovered on Saturday in a company in the Nuoro area, and the block on the movement of livestock in 52 municipalities sanctioned by the local health authority, inevitably recall the beginning of the historical disasters suffered by Sardinia with swine fever and bluetongue.
This is why the trade associations immediately sounded the alarm bell by launching a heartfelt appeal to the Region and the Ministry to prepare all the containment measures to isolate the infected animals, try to treat them and above all protect the still unharmed farms throughout Sardinia from a potential economic catastrophe.
The request is therefore unanimous: a task force of experts should be deployed to stop the contagion in its tracks.
The regional health councilor Armando Bartolazzi yesterday said he was already in action to manage the emergency. Despite this, there have been multiple calls from businesses to institutions to nip the contagion in the bud.
