Poverty on the rise in Cagliari , as shown by the data summarized in the XII Caritas dossier entitled " Charity, the way to peace " and presented this morning at the headquarters of the Unione Sarda .

In the last year, 5,200 people have contacted the assistance center to receive help, a thousand more than last year . The majority is represented by women , passing from 47.3 to 51.3%. The canteen service provided around 90 thousand meals from October 2021 to last September with a daily average of just under 250 per day.

«A poverty that increases - the comment of the archbishop of Cagliari and secretary of the CEI, Giuseppe Baturi - and that seems to drag even the youngest who have no way of receiving aid. Hope is above all in the community's ability to respond , as we have seen in welcoming people arriving from Afghanistan or Ukraine. This is a good sign."

The Italians who ask for help are in large majority , 68.5%, but there is a strong increase in the number of Ukrainians , who have risen to 9.3% (they were 0.8% the previous year). The divorced are growing, from 6.4 to 7.7%. The majority have their own home, 87.8%, while the homeless are 12.2%.

As regards the level of education, the presence of graduates doubled, from 3.2 to 6.8%. The growth of educated women was particularly significant.

"These data - explains the head of the Study Centre/Observatory on Poverty and Caritas resources Francesco Manca - confirm that the educational qualification is no longer a passport to enter the job market ".

As regards the professional condition, the unemployed represent the majority , with a further increase from 50.7 to 53.7% . The number of unemployed women is growing. A quarter of the people who turn to Caritas also receive an income, but that's not enough . One turns to Caritas primarily for economic reasons, and both because the income received is not sufficient and because one is unemployed or in any case does not have any income. These three categories represent 60% of the total.

Listening continues to be the main request , followed by that of goods and services (26%). Problems related to housing and work follow.

"A dossier - explains the director of diocesan Caritas, Monsignor Marco Lai - also of denunciation, which offers ideas and can be useful for institutions to find solutions ".

Many testimonies in the dossier. From those who have found refuge at Caritas, to the hopes of those who are trying to get off drugs.
